Welcome to Rodans Odyssey!
Hello, I am Rodan (It is not actually my name but that is another story) and I started on my odyssey in the early months of 2014. My Odyssey is to leave behind all the problems and long stressful hours of the corporate world by the time I reach my early 30s (I am currently in my Mid/Late 20s). Free to live a less stressful life, working jobs I enjoy and not necessarily the ones that make the most money and to spend more time on my passions. Living my life as if money didn’t matter.
Unfortunately I’ve seen the hardships people endure when they don’t have enough of a financial safety net below them closely and how this impacts on the enjoyment of their lives every day and the stress and strain it forces people to live through when the unexpected happens. I would like to avoid this fate for my immediate family and myself and If I can do this while helping other people avoid getting themselves trapped and stuck in a rut due to no fault of their own with the help of my blog, then I would be very proud of doing so.
I want to give you a quick history of what my take is on the problem for me and many others in today’s working world. Like many of us in today’s workforce of tomorrow we are highly educated, after spending allot of time and money on our studies and we are full time employed working for someone else (generally speaking). We earn a salary and work 5 days a week, potentially with long and costly commute to and from work. What we have is job security and a great career path lined up (great? well, a path at least) and we have all done very well to achieve this.
Then we think back to our younger days and suddenly adult life has taken a firm hold, we have a number of Direct debits, we pray for the weekend and we have to do things like call the bank or schedule in meeting some friends weeks in advance because suddenly life has become insanely busy. We are earning some serious money now, not like when you were in University or school when pocket change could get you through the week, but where is this serious money? Is allot of it gone before we see it? At this stage of life many people are willingly putting themselves into debt to buy the latest and greatest things, signing up for a lifetime of full time
enslavem employment, I think this is an economic trap fueled by consumerism and the blind following of social norms. At the rate our lives are moving now imagine how it will be in ten years time. Will we be much better off at that stage? Do you want to work and live like this until you retire, at 65? 67? or even later! We spend so much of our time working for others, we sell our time based on a financial number and tire ourselves out so much we waste our free time. Be aware the danger of valuing your time as though it will never run out.
Have you forgotten all the dreams you had that you would love to fulfill if you just had more free time and money to do so? Have you lost hope on learning new skills, being healthier, being happier, less stressed, learning a new language and just having more freedom financially and mentally?
Escaping this this sad outcome is Rodans Odyssey, and throughout this Blog are the steps that I am taking to achieve this. It may sound surreal or impossible and that it would requires one to win the lotto but you will see here that really is not difficult, you will see that we don’t need to work for our whole lives, be stressed about money/work and live paycheck to paycheck all whilst being in debt… all you need is a bit of time, planning, discipline and the desire to live a less than ordinary life. I want to assure you that I am very average in this sense, I have student loans*, I earn an average salary and I rent accommodation in an expansive part of the world (commuter belts of London…) I have no financial qualifications of any kind and I do not work in the finance industry. I am in my mid to late 20s. Despite this, I am on the way to achieving my odyssey slowly but surely, and you can be too!
To achieve this we must swot up on some topics and in general these revolve around Personal Finances, Happiness, Expenses, Lifestyle, Earning additional incomes, Investments, DIY, and General thoughts on life.
So if you are new to this all don’t be put off. It really is just a collection of very simple ideas which, when put into practice can have a huge effect. So feel free to start at the start of my Blog and read through post by post if you want to live a life like Rodan. I am no expert on these fields but I am living them day to day with a desire to make it out of this trap.
I hope you want to join me and if so best of luck!
* (update as of Feb 2016, I no longer have student loans and I am now officially debt free! I hope to stay this way for my whole life)
